The Deering Estate in partnership with Live Arts Miami and #ARTiculatingClimate present PRELUDE to 2100,a new immersive arts experience imagining a future Miami, conceived and curated by Susan Caraballo and created in collaboration with over 30 multi-disciplinary artists.
Set in 2050, the Deering Estate has been converted into a residential complex made up of tenants who have been displaced from different parts of the world due to climate change. When rooms become available, they decide to host their first OPEN HOUSE, while re-opening partially as an art space.
“Guests” will meet the residents who are adapting to a new world and living alternatively: JIMMY from Central Florida, who had first-hand experience with sugar cane burns; Venezuelan MAGDALENA, who made a promise to herself not to bring a child into this fractured world; ANITA who lost her home in Liberty City due to climate gentrification; among others. Their personal lives and conflicts, and other strange phenomena, get in the way of the OPEN HOUSE.
“The work explores notions of community, climate change, loss and love while incorporating environmental history, scientific facts, magical realism, and speculative fiction with the intention of empowering audiences toward an affirming tomorrow,” Caraballo said.
Prelude to 2100 features a theatrical component written by Juan C. Sánchez and directed by Jennifer de Castroverde, interactive installations by artists Laurencia Strauss, Kerry Phillips, and the Department of Reflection, plus dance works by Olujimi Dance and Sandra Portal-Andreu. Other artworks featured are by AMLgMATD, Cara Despain, Alicia Eggert, Gustavo Matamoros, Jits Microfarm, The Queer Theory Library, Carrie Sieh, Fereshteh Toosi, and Kim Yantis & Lucinda Linderman.
Originally scheduled for two weekends and staged throughout various intimate spaces in the historic houses at the Deering Estate, Prelude to 2100 has been adapted to take place entirely outdoors from Feb 3-6 due to the recent Omicron surge. See more on Deering’s COVID-19 policy below.
Prelude to 2100 by Susan Caraballo is the final installment of six new performance works addressing climate change and sustainability created by Live Art Miami’s LALA Artists in Residence. The Live Arts Lab Alliance (LALA) residency program empowers local performing artists from different disciplines to generate new work and establish new networks of creative feedback and collaboration.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Miami-based Susan Caraballo has over 20 years of experience as a producer and curator having worked with many arts organizations. Caraballo organized the 2019 symposium at PAMM “ARTiculating Sustainability: Resilience in the Climate Crisis?” She received funding through the Knight Arts Challenge to initiate #ARTiculatingClimate supporting works by Miami-based artists addressing climate issues. In her own practice at the intersection of curating, directing, and collective artmaking, Susan is exploring collaborative projects oriented toward the ecological crisis.
