All things Turkey in Miami | The Miami Moms

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and we all know the Turkey is the Star of the Show. There’s no shortage of options when it comes to selecting the perfect bird. To help save you time, Here’s some tips that can help when selecting the perfect bird

Decide if you like Fresh or Frozen:

A fresh turkey can only be labeled FRESH if it has never been chilled below 26 degrees. A frozen turkey is chilled below 0 degrees and may be sold as “previously frozen”. However, most agree that freezing a turkey can adversely affect the texture and taste of the meat.

How big Should the Turkey be?

Feeding a crowd can be tricky when estimating the size of the turkey. Generally 1lb per person but if you have big eaters or like leftovers- plan for 1.5 lbs

With that said, let’s say you’re expecting a large crowd – 20 people (bless your heart, you’re one brave mama). Sometimes it’s best to go with a smaller bird – less cooking time, and less risk of the bird drying out. In this case, you’re better off cooking 2 smaller Turkeys rather than one giant 25 lb bird.

We recommend choosing a fresh turkey without any added ingredients, and organic, kosher or premium-brand turkeys are all great options. If the turkey is not kosher,  you can brine it yourself for extra-moist, flavorful meat.
