We had the pleasure of connecting with Miriam last month, and were able to create a blog post about Surrogacy and everything you need to know about it in Florida! We are so happy to welcome her back for this week’s Meet a Mom! So we asked this Momma/ Business Owner some questions!
Briefly introduce yourself and explain where you are from!
My name is Miriam Torres. I was born in New York City to Puerto Rican parents. I live in Miami Beach with my husband and daughter. My husband is originally from India and our daughter was born in Miami Beach.
How many children do you have and what are their ages?
I have 1 daughter and she is 8 years old. I love children and would have loved to have 5. I came from a small family and it was my dream to have a lot of children however my daughter is like having 5 children! LOL.
What are your favorite activities/ restaurants to go here in Miami?
My favorite activities are to travel. When I was a child my parents would take us to Canada during the summer and I think that is when my travel bug started. I have travelled extensively worldwide. I have been to more than 60 countries. Whether it is a staycation at a hotel or traveling by plane, we do our best to get away as much as we can. Our next big trip is to India for our daughter to meet her family in Bangalore and Goa. Our daughter has caught the travel bug and loves to stay a luxury hotels. You can say she came out like her mother.
We love seafood so we tend to gravitate to seafood restaurants. We love Hosteria Romana in South Beach for pasta seafood. We also love Puerto Rican and Indian food. I like Isla del Encanto for Puerto Rican food which is quite a hike for us coming from the beach but worth it. We love Zaika in North Miami and Akash in South Beach for Indian food. When we don’t go out to eat, I can get busy in the kitchen making a great Mofongo with lobster or Curry shrimp at home.
Tell us what you guys love doing as a family, describe the perfect day!
The perfect day for us is playing racquetball or tennis and then going to eat. My interest in playing sports started as a child. We play indoors as well as outdoors. In the Miami heat playing racquetball outdoors is quite a workout! I used to be able to play like 10 games but now not so much in the heat.
We love pools, if we are not at the pool at our house, we will go to the pools in Miami Beach. We are an outdoor family. Everything we do involves being outside and mostly being around Miami Beach.
We live waterfront so we enjoy barbequing. We have been known to cook up some great meals on the barbeque. We love throwing big parties at the house specifically Halloween and Christmas with all my daughter’s friends and their parents. We are looking forward to 2021 to continue our holiday party traditions.
In addition, we are big Kansas City Chiefs fans. My husband went to school in Kansas City and became a fan of the team right away. When we were dating many of our dates were to go to see the game at a bar. We have been loyal fans for many years and are excited that they won the super bowl last year. It was quite a moment for us. Go Chiefs!
In addition to being an amazing Mom, tell us a little bit about your career/ and or ways you are involved in the community!
I started Fertility Heaven, Egg Donor and Surrogacy Agency almost 10 years ago. It was my husband’s idea to start the agency. He thought we would be good at helping people suffering from infertility have a child of their own, with the help of an egg donor, surrogate or both. Since we started the agency, we have grown a lot in the last 3 years from serving mainly Florida to working with clinics and parents throughout the United States and Internationally.
We are a modern forward-thinking agency. Our agency welcomes all types of couples and parents. Whether they are a traditional couple, single parent or same sex couple. Parents have the option of selecting donors from Florida, out of state or international. Our surrogates are mostly from Florida, California and Texas.
What do you love about your job/ or volunteer positions?
I love all the babies that are born and the friendships we have formed with parents throughout the U.S. and internationally. They are part of our family. It’s an amazing feeling to be able to help an infertile couple or person have a baby of their own.
What is your favorite part of owning your own business?
I never thought I would be in the baby business. I can’t believe how much I love what I do. My favorite part is the brand we have created. People always compliment us for the attention we give them and being available to them when they need us.
What is the best piece of advice you have gotten from another Mom?
My best friend who I have known for most of my life and who is the god mother to our daughter has always been inspirational to me. She is full of wisdom, endurance and aspires to be great every day no matter what challenge is put in front of her. I have incorporated those qualities into my own life. I like living peacefully and working peacefully. These qualities are also important for our employees to have.
What do you consider the ideal “me time”?
I have been an early riser my entire life. 7 days a week I wake up early. I am usually up by 7 am, having my Redbull. I may choose to sit in the patio looking at the water or go to my office which has a zen type of décor and feel. However I can easily give that all up for a 5 star spa resort instead for my “me time”
